TÜBİTAK 2209-A TÜBİTAK 2209-A

Serigrafi Baskı Teknolojisi ile Esnek Enerji Depolama Cihazlarının Geliştirilmesi. Development of Flexible Energy Storage Devices Using Screen Printing Technology.

A project I took part in as project partner within the TÜBİTAK 2209-A Research Projects Support Programme for University Students. It started on 7 April 2025 and was completed on 31 July 2026. The aim was to screen print supercapacitor electrodes for flexible electronics. To do that, we developed a water-based carbon ink with no toxic solvents, printed electrodes with it, assembled them into coin cells and measured them.

Background

Supercapacitors store energy in the electrical double layer that forms between the electrode and the electrolyte [1]. Because charging and discharging don’t rely on a chemical reaction, they offer higher power density than batteries and a much longer cycle life, in return for lower energy density [2]. The most common electrode materials are carbon-based ones, which have high surface area and are cheap [3]. Activated carbon is the main source of capacitance, while carbon black and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) build a conductive network and lower the series resistance.

We chose screen printing to make the electrodes. It is low-cost and scalable, and gives control over the thickness and geometry of the printed film [4]. The hard part is the ink: its viscosity must drop under the squeegee and recover after printing. Conventional electrode production relies on toxic solvents such as NMP. We aimed for a water-based ink, using water-soluble polymers (PAA, PVA, PVP) as binders.

The trials

Most of the work was the ink trials from February to April 2026. We prepared many mixtures with activated carbon, carbon black or GNP and different binders (PAA, PVA, PVP) and looked at print quality. The turning points were:

  • Binder choice (February–early April). Carbomer PAA (~150,000 molecular weight) didn’t mix homogeneously with the active material. PVA mixed quickly but left a granular surface and was incompatible with PAA, which we think comes from strong hydrogen bonding between the chains. The most stable ink came from SIGMA PAA with Mv ~450,000.
  • Repeatability (14–15 April). We couldn’t get consistent results from the same recipe. The cause was carbon agglomeration from insufficient mixing. Raising the mixing time from about 3 hours to 12 hours fixed it. Because the surface stayed brittle, we added PVP as an auxiliary binder. The literature reports that PVP prevents agglomeration in carbon-based inks and improves film integrity [5].
  • Final recipe (21–28 April). We used PVP and SIGMA PAA together and replaced carbon black with GNP. Drying speed, flexibility and surface were satisfying.

The final recipe

The binder is PVP with SIGMA PAA, the conductive additive is GNP and the solvent is deionised water. The mass ratio is 9.5:0.5:1 (activated carbon : GNP : binder). The printed film did not crack or delaminate when flexed. We also prepared and printed the recipe at three times the batch size, and saw no cracks or inhomogeneity, so the formulation scales. The electrodes were printed on aluminium foil in a 40×45 mm pattern, as several stacked prints, each dried at 80 °C.

Cell assembly and measurements

We cut the electrodes to CR2032 coin-cell size, wetted them with lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) electrolyte and assembled the cell with a separator. The first cell was built on 4 May 2026. On 5 May we measured it with a GAMRY Interface 1000, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV).

On a Nyquist plot, the high-frequency intercept gives the equivalent series resistance, and a near-vertical rise at low frequency shows capacitive behaviour. A near-rectangular CV curve indicates that energy storage happens mainly through the electric double-layer mechanism [6]. The measurements confirmed that the screen-printed electrodes work in a coin cell and show capacitive behaviour.

Structural characterisation

We examined the surface of the printed electrode by scanning electron microscopy (SEM, 15 kV) and its phase structure by X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the SEM image the activated carbon particles and GNP platelets form a porous network without cracks. This porous structure affects the surface area available to electrolyte ions, and therefore the double-layer capacitance [3]. The XRD pattern has a broad (002) hump from the amorphous structure of the activated carbon and a weak reflection from the GNP. The sharp peaks belong to the aluminium foil current collector. No new phase appeared beyond the expected components, so the ink components were not chemically degraded during production.

Conclusion

Without using toxic organic solvents, we developed a water-based ink that can be screen printed and made a working, flexible supercapacitor electrode with it. What I took from this work:

  • The type and molecular weight of the binder decide the ink’s viscosity and the surface quality of the print. Compatibility between polymers should also be checked with preliminary trials.
  • For repeatability, mixing time is decisive: insufficient mixing leads to agglomeration.
